The monsters are scary in such a way that the author leaves a lot to the imagination when she is describing these creatures. She definitely describes them and does it well, however I still don't have an exact print out in my head of what these monsters look like. Which to me is great because I love that the author left it up to us to decide what they truly look like. It makes for a scarier story. As a metalhead, I appreciated the Megadeth and Metallica references as they’re some of my all-time favorite bands so that was pretty cool. When it comes to the ending of this novel, again, it just didn’t feel right or realistic to me. Don’t worry, I won’t ruin anything for you, but the ending wasn’t spectacular or something that blew me away. It was okay but not anything great.

I think it was good writing except for all of that pointless dialogue. When you finally get to humanity vs other is where it got good. Every time one of these popped up in a scene, I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of irritation. I think I speak for most people when I say that I want to read something new in the horror genre. Seeing all these tropes takes away the element of surprise and scare factor since you see it coming a mile away with its high beams on. Another frustration I had with this book is that everyone was Caucasian. I wish Ahlborn had incorporated BIPOC characters so we weren’t just reading about wealthy white kids partying in the woods.

The most common reason why your diesel car is juddering while you are driving is due to clogged fuel injectors. That said, the novel has several serious problems. The first of these is the uneven characterization. Shinn draws some nicely defined characters in Madeleine, Brandon, and Villette. Even Cody and Jayla have a few good moments which bring out their character, motivations, and feelings. But there it ends. Pietro, Shollo, Reese, Tivol, and a number of others are barely drawn. Most of the stories on this list are told from the point of view of humans, but Watts’s short story “The Things” flips that on its head, telling the story of Carpenter’s The Thing from the perspective of the invading alien beings. Just as we are disgusted by the distorted shapes that the Thing takes on while transforming, it is equally disgusted by our individuality and inability (and unwillingness) to change. In this story, it’s humans that are the creatures.

There's a nice group of secondary characters to flesh out the action: I was fond of Cody, the courier whose knowledge of who lives where comes in handy. Madeleine's two suitors, Tivol and Reese, are nicely contrasted (most readers will be in no doubt about whom she will choose). There's an array of authority figures, including Madeleine's father and Harlo, the head divine of the temple, to help or hinder as the plot demands.
