We believe that suicide is preventable and strive to make our services easily accessible and barrier-free. We seek to break down the stigma of mental health and suicide by creating an environment where people are comfortable seeking help for themselves, talking about their thoughts and feelings, and supporting and seeking help for suicidal loved ones. The design maximizes solar-energy production while minimizing heat loss or gain through the exterior walls. The roof is covered with solar panels. In a typical European climate, Solace House expects the solar installation to produce 6,500 kWh per year—inhabitants are expected to use around 6,000 kWh, a net gain of 500.
Grief & Bereavement Programs
Founded by Pieta House founder and Irish Senator Joan Freeman, the senator has announced her departure from Pieta House on December 31 to concentrate solely on growing the US-based suicide and self-harm service. Intent on serving the Irish diaspora and all other communities and nationalities in New York, Solace House hopes to extend to other areas of the US with high Irish populations in the future. Solace House opened its doors in 2015 when Ireland’s Senator Joan Freeman established a one-year pilot program in New York City, bringing this service’s first U.S. location from Ireland to Long Island City, Queens located in the New York Irish Center building.
