Gallows Bridge (The Harlequin Crew Book 5)
About this deal
Gallows Bridge Farm is part of the much larger Upper Ray Meadows complex and lies within the joint BBOWT and RSPB Ray Valley Restoration project area. Kennet opened to the public at Gallows Bridge, close to the old junction with the Bradford Canal. A Society member led a public walk along the remains of the Bradford Canal. Despite 100 years passing, there are still a surprising number of canal structures which survive.
The construction of the bridge carrying the Exeter bypass over the Honiton Road, just east of Gallows Corner, was part of the second phase of the new Exeter bypass in the 1930s. The first phase, from Pinhoe Road to Hill Barton railway bridge was completed by 1933. The second phase to Countess Wear was put out to tender in September 1933, and by August 1934, was progressing well. An innovation of the route was the bridge (referred to in the press as a 'flyover') over the A30, Honiton Road, a way of avoiding a roundabout or road junction. A slip road was planned to allow access from Honiton to the bypass. The simplest form (as often used in the game " Hangman") resembles an inverted "L" (or a Greek/Cyrillic "Г"), with a single upright and a horizontal beam to which the rope noose would be attached.
